My top 5 Tips for Potty Training
In my house, right now, I am potty training a 19 month old and teaching a 6 month old to sit up by herself.
My kids consume 100% of my time so to get anything extra done I have to work over 100%. Thankfully i get to be a stay-at-home-mom or i dont think i would get anything done. My hat is off to those who keep home, raise kids, and work outside the house!
Potty training is new to me. I've never attempted to teach a kid that what she has been doing all her life, pottying in her diaper, is no longer how it's done. I am by no means an expert and I'm sure every child requires a different method, but here are my top 5 tips for potty training that are working for us!
1. Every time you change a diaper narrate to your child that he/she went "potty" and "pee" or "poop"
2. Familiarize your child with their new toilet and tell them it is "the potty"
3. Have your child sit on their new potty 3 times a day for 3 minutes each time. This amount will vary depending on your child, so use your best judgment. Don't leave your child alone and make sure they stay sitting down. The whole time they are on the potty, narrate what they are doing and what you hope will happen. ;)
4. Have a reward system for when your child successfully uses their new potty. I use a sticker chart that is hanging on the wall right next to her toilet. Reward her/him by letting her/him pick a sticker and put it anywhere on the chart and give her/him one for their hand. Be sure to praise them and tell them what a good job they did!
5. Let her/him watch you clean up their potty so they knows where their accomplishment is going.
I hope these help you with your potty traing! Enjoy not changing any more dirty diapers!!
